I did try a couple apps, xdemineur and rxvt seem to work but I can't type into the rxvt terminal. xkbd starts but you can't see the keys and so on. I think that there is quite a bit of configuration to be done for it to work well. Perhaps installing the gpe base stuff would get it to work. I have the same problem and can't switch back and forth with Opie. To get anything done I simply worked with it via ssh over the usb net. Good luck!
