not all items showing on day view?

when I went the 'day view' DB is not displaying some items at the top
I have 'white space' at the bottom (so there is screen space)
I don't have 'H' showing at the top

if I toggle 'hide/show all items' I gain an 'S';
touching the 'S' make it go away, but, items still don't show

using 'up/up/up/up...' with nav key eventually brings the 'hidden' items;
likewise, the up/down triangle pair at RHS bottom brings the 'hidden'
items into view

view display options has selected:
compress, show time bars, popup menu,scroll for next, std view

the item not showing is an advance float

so why not all items are showing when I have screen space to do so ?
