That was the key.  As I said, it has been so long since I've had a real crash (which is why I haven't given the darn Treo up) -- I went into a panic.  
For some reason, BBuddy did NOT restore the preferences on the next sync after the hard reset, so I had to manually restore them and I had forgotten the basic fact that "saved preferences" and "unsaved preferences" are DATABASES - I was trying to restore them as APPLICATIONS, which BBuddy didn't object to, but it wasn't really restoring what I needed. Hit "restore database" and poof! The icons and other settings are back, though my Saved View is not...but I can recreate it.

Yes between them, BackupBuddy (since 1998 or so), PrefDoctor and now Reset Doctor had saved me frequently - I just forgot how.

Whew -- back to normal operations here.
