floating events

I'm trying to get my ducks in a row before I march over to the store to buy
my first non-palm smartphone.  I'm looking at the Samsung Captivate, which
has a Droid OS. (we have an AT&T family plan, so I have to look at AT&T's
products)

 

First, I need to buy and install Pimlical to convert my Palm's calendar data
to google's calendar, correct?

 

I really REALLY use floating events, both as a way to quickly jot things
down to deal with later, as well as regularly scheduled tasks (put flea med
on pet, send meeting reminders, call for annual exam, etc)

 

Can someone explain to me what I would use in the google calendar to mimic
Datebk's floating events?  This one is a deal breaker for me, I don't know
if I can live without floating events.  I'm hoping and praying there is a
comparable function in google's calendar.
