Since I love my iPad, but still miss DateBk, I too have written to him directly, asking him to reconsider his decision or to work with an established Mac/iOS developer to port DateBk and Pimlical to those platforms. It will truly be a shame if CESD sticks to his decision, both for those of us who have appreciated his software designs, and for the good cause his work supports, which will miss the potential funding that could be extracted from a universe of iOS users that is far larger than the Palm platform ever achieved. However, your allegation that Apple always prohibits development of apps that compete with their own is mistaken. A quick visit to the App Store will reveal numerous competitors to Apple's default camera and music player apps, for example. As for apps with different kinds of calendar functions, a simple search on the term "calendar" results in 3,188 hits for the iPhone and 991 for the iPad. Many of these aren't relevant to what we'd want, but plenty are. Indeed, members of this mailing list have often discussed such apps as Pocket Informant here. PI is aimed at the same uses as DateBk and is undeniably a direct (and superior) competitor to Apple's Calendar app. That's why I'm convinced that there's no insurmountable reason there couldn't be an iOS version of DateBk.
