IMPORTANT NOTE ON JAVA 8 - PLEASE READ

Java is now rolling out Java 8 as a standard update to everyone who has Java
7.

HOWEVER - Java 8 is not compatible with Pimlical at this time, because Java
8 no longer includes support for the ODBC drivers (via the JDBC-ODBC Bridge)
which are a requirement for Pimlical to read and write the old Palm MDB
databases (the MS Access Databases).

Pimlical no longer needs those databases as it has its own formats for the
calendar, tasks, memos and contacts databases, but it STILL uses the MDB
databases for for backwards compatibility for users who are either (a) still
using a Palm handheld, or (b) using programs like CompanionLink that need
the MDB databases in order to sync.

Pimlical/Desktop is now in the process of being updated to examine the Java
version and it will now tell you that if you have the preference
SynchronizeWithPalmOS set to TRUE, that proceeding will force that
preference to FALSE and the MDB databases will be ignored. Otherwise, you
can cancel out of Pimlical and install Java 7 which will then allow you to
continue reading and writing those databases and also allow you to do a
final conversion of those databases if you had not done so previously.

If Java was updated to version 8, for now you would need to remove it and
re-install Java 7 which you can download from:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jsp

I was rather hoping that there would be some reasonable third-party solution
for the ODBC driver issue, but right now the only options I have seen have
various restrictions or are inordinately expensive. And it is not going to
be an issue for most users who are moving forwards - only those who are
still tied to their palm handhelds.

I will be posting an official update to Pimlical/Desktop this weekend
(2.3.25) which at least includes a test for Java 8 and warns users about
this issue so they can downgrade back to Java 7. There is no timetable at
this time for a version that is compatible with Java 8, but it should not
take that long to get it out...

And it is always possible that I may find some workaround for the JDBC-ODBC
issue, in which case I will post a note on this forum about it....

Cheers!
