Well it could be she was intimidated with the Palm itself. It might have been the new thing on the block when she tried it. I almost lost my Palm years ago... if I had lost it back then, I probably would not have replaced it. Now I would replace it or at least get something similar.

Also I am sure there are people out there that would still rather write a letter with paper and pen than write one on a computer or typewriter.

You could get a backup program like BackupBuddy. If I remember right, HS lists did not automatically get saved back then. (Don't know about now.)
