I have used Essential for the U3 flash drive for quite some time and it is a very good product for extensive notekeeping, etc. It is superb and has a very small footprint with pretty good response. It is not as elaborate as Microsoft OneNote but it is also not as expensive.
If you do decide to use Essential - make sure to also use TrueCrypt to lock down your USB flash drive and protect your data. I name my flash drive with my name and phone number. This way if I drop it and someone finds it - my contact info is right there.
I use a U3 flash drive to run Essential, Mozilla, Password safe, Ultra Edit and Pidgin (IM application).

Athar
