I'm on sat internet and wondering if tethering to a 3G capable phone is a replacement option.

I meant to ask if you tried a direct connection since I don't yet have WiFi at home.

But it still gets more complicated.  AT&T does not have 3G in this area yet.  Verizon does but I think they disable tethering.  And Bluetooth alone is too slow, so WiFi would be a requirement, such as your Razr2.
