I still have and use a Palm TX. Fortunately, a New Zealand outfit
came up with a beta driver that allows it to hotsync with Palm Desktop
on 64 bit Windows machines, but I seldom actually do so.
Aside from the standard Palm Address Book, Calendar, Todo, Memo,
what-have-you functionality, the principal use case for my PDA has
historically been eBook viewer. I first got a Palm OS device about 15
years ago when a then employer decided that IT staff should have PDAs,
and a Handspring Visor Deluxe running Palm OS 3.1 appeared on my desk.
I subsequently used a Handspring Visor Pro, Palm Tungsten E, and
Tapwave Zodiac 2 before getting the current device.
I went looking for things that would aid me in my work as a system
administrator. An early discovery was Plucker, an open source offline
HTML viewer for Palm devices. The Plucker Desktop was cross platform
and available for Windows, Linux, and OS/X. It could "pluck" websites
and convert content to a form viewable in the Plucker viewer on the
PDA. IT worked fine for local HTML as well, and a lot of the
documentation for the stuff I used was in HTML format, so I could
carry a searchable documentation library in my pocket. It wasn't long
till I discovered I could comfortably read other stuff that way, so
lots of things on Project Gutenberg and elsewhere got converted and
add. At this point, there are about 4,000 Plucker documents on the
4GB SD card in the TX.
The first target for the Mobipocket eBook effort was the Palm, and
most Amazon Kindle eBook offerings display in the Palm Mobi reader
program. A variety of stuff was issued in Palm Reader/eReader format,
and I had viewers for plain text, Word/RTF, and PDF files, so I could
read pretty much anything. The only issue was remembering what
documents were in what format read by what reader.
These days a generic Android tablet running Android 4.2.2 Jellybean is
the principal eBook viewer. I use the open source FBReaderJ program,
which views ePub, Mobi, FB2, and (via plugins) PDF and DjVu files.
FBReaderJ got the nod because I didn't have to *care* what format the
eBook was in. As long as it wasn't encumbered with DRM, I could read
it, and I don't *get* eBooks with DRM.
I still have a fair bit of stuff in Plucker format I can't read on the
tablet, but I am gradually replacing the Plucker versions with ePub.
Meanwhile, the version of FBReader for Windows, Linux, and OS/X *does*
display Plucker files as well as ePub/Mobi/FB2, so I can use something
besides the PDA to view them.
A lot of the personal productivity stuff done on the Palm can be done
on the tablet. On the Palm side, I used to sync with Outlook, and
made it a reflex to add anyone I was likely to communicate with more
than once to my Outlook Contacts files, which became the basis of the
Palm Address book contents. I hotsynced the PDA at home and at the
office, so anything added in one location was propagated to the other
next hotsync, giving me redundancy and backup copies.
These days I use Gmail as my main email account, and Gmail Contacts
serves the purposes Outlook used to, with Google Calendar taking over
for Datebook. While I *could* theoretically do email on the PDA, I
didn't. Too much of what I got and needed to reply to really needed
to be viewed on a larger screen, and needed a lengthier response than
a PDA made convenient, even *with* a folding external keyboard. Email
simply waited till I was in a convenient place to handle it with big
screen and keyboard. I can do email fairly well on the tablet with a
USB keyboard, but generally don't.
The only issue with the PDA is sharing data, as there isn't really a
good way to sync what's on the PDA with what's in the cloud. This has
not been a deal breaker. The critical stuff (mostly the contacts) now
largely exists on PDA, tablet, and cloud, and if the PDA broke
tomorrow it would not be a calamity, as everything I do on it is
doable elsewhere.
