Unfortunately, I've never been able to read books off the card. The
Mobipocket books on the card make the program run and run and run
trying to open. As long as I sync and read the books off the "hard
drive" I don't have any problem. With the eReader software the program
just doesn't "see" the books on the card. I talked to tech support but
their advice didn't work. I've tried a couple of different cards to no
avail.
In my experience, it's all about location. The viewer software
expects to see the books in a particular place. On my PDA, the Mobi
viewer sees and opens books in the /palm/launcher directory. (The
Mobi docs claim they can be placed in /palm/programs/mobi, but that
does not work. The viewer simply doesn't see them.)
eReader volumes need to be in /palm/books. Again, they are not seen elsewhere.
Since I read Mobi volumes on my PDA and on a tablet and occasionally
my desktop. I did an experiment. Mobi files for other platforms are
delivered with a .MOBI extension. The default for the PDA was a .PRC
file. I renamed the Mobi .PRC files on the card to .MOBI, and the
viewer saw them and opened them.
This was not a surprise. The files are in Palm database format, and
the viewer looks at the first record of the database to determine what
kind of file it is and whether it's one it can view, so renaming made
no difference. It *did* maker life easier in other ways. *Programs*
on Palm devices are all PRC files, and the PDA expects to find
programs resident on the card in /palm/launcher. Renaming the Mobi
files made it easy to tell which files in /Palm/launcher *were* Mobi
eBook files. (The vast majority of them here.)
Which card is used is irrelevant. My TX has a 4GB SD card. My older
Tapwave Zodiac 2 had two 2GB cards, and one was essentially devoted to
eBooks. As long as the books were in the correct directories *on* the
card(s), the viewers saw and opened them.
I'd do the following: pop the SD card from the TX and put it in a USB
reader. Look at the contents of the card from Windows Explorer. Make
sure the eBook files are actually *in* the correct directories. Also,
run a file system check on the card. SD cards come formatted with the
FAT16 (for cards up to 2GB) and FAT32 (for larger cards.) If there is
file system corruption on the card, things can get confused, and FAT
file systems are easily corrupted.
You can check the file system by right clicking on the drive in My
Computer and selecting Properties. In the Properties box, select the
Tools tab, and click Check Now under Error Checking. Tell it to
automatically fix problems. (An alternative is Start/Run/cmd.exe, and
in the console windows enter CHKDSK /F <drive letter>, where drive
letter is whatever Windows assigned to the card in the reader.)
If Windows finds and fixes problems, you are likely to get a FOUND.000
directory appearing in the root directory of the card, and the content
will be fragments of damaged files. You can just delete that
directory and its contents.
Put the card back in the TX and see if you still have the issues of
eBooks not being seen.
Also, it's possible for a Mobi eBook *file* to be damaged and not open
on the PDA. I've had Mobi files I can open on the desktop or tablet
that the Palm viewer chokes on. If you have a lot of Mobi files,
figuring out which is the problem child is a tougher problem.

The main difference between the E and the TX aside from screen size
and installed RAM is that the TX uses non-volatile memory, so you
don't lose stuff if your battery runs out of power. Internal memory
on a TX isn't really a "hard drive" - it's a form of RAM. (The
Lifedrive *did* use a micro hard drive for expansion storage.) This
*ought* to work on your TX.
