Ok, I tested it again and it seems I just had a sticky D-pad that was bouncing around.  Cleaned it up and I'm able to move the highlighted portion of the text.  So that part seems resolved mostly.

Now, a new question about the search box.  The search box stays up and full of text so a subsequent scan just adds more text to the box instead of erasing and starting the search over.  So I still have to click the blue arrow to clear the search box before I can scan again.  Is there a quick keystroke that could clear the box or return to the box with all the text highlighted so that more typing erases the contents of the search instead of appending at first?  In other words, if you navigate away from the search box (by checking off an item or scrolling the list) and then focus goes back to search, it will select all text in the box then start typing new text.

Right now it does appear to highlight the text in the search box but the moment any typing starts it jumps to the end of the text and appends more.  I tried it with the on-screen keyboard as well and it behaves similarly.  If the on-screen keyboard stays up all the time (which obscures a lot of the list) then the search box will erase and rewrite.  If I close the on-screen keyboard and then open it again, the search text is only appended and never erased.
