Huh?  I thought your device must have a physical keyboard, otherwise I don't understand the request for a keystroke to use to clear the search text.

What device are you using?

There are many different kinds of places to touch on the screen, that do many different things.  Can you narrow down that step a bit?

When I follow these steps on several devices, the search text is highlighted for me always.

The built in keyboards are rather small, so the "is so huge" comment makes me wonder if you are using a third party soft keyboard utility.  What happens if you try the built in soft keyboard?  Also, is the device in Portrait mode or in Landscape mode?

The search term is what filters the list.  Clearing the search term would change what items are listed, and that would be disruptive to other usage patterns.  Opening/closing the keyboard should not reset the list view (and does not reliably indicate that the person has finished searching and wants to clear the list view), so that's not a viable option.
