I see, you want to do this programmatically.  That changes everything, and would have been helpful to mention up front.  :-)

How about Escape to cancel any active input and make sure the subsequent input goes to the search box, followed by several Backspaces to make sure the search box is cleared.

The code for Escape is 27.
The code for Backspace is 8.

A blank spot on the list, thanks.  I eventually guessed that was probably what was meant, since on my device there was no blank space (the steps did not mention that, and I was using a large list) and no matter where I tapped it derailed the rest of the steps.  I eventually forced a blank spot to appear, and tapped there, but was unable to reproduce the problem.

I don't mean to be picky but since I can't see over your shoulder, the only thing I can go by is the written description.  If you think there are many possible actions, it's fine (and great) to say so, but please mention specifically which action you followed.  I hate to ask for specifics because it makes me sound pedantic, but I have no choice:  computers are exceedingly pedantic.  :-)

Saying "just about anywhere" is not specific enough because for example, on my screen every possible place to tap does something specific that happens to derail the rest of the steps.  If the steps had mentioned "tap on blank space in the list", then I would have known to fill in the ambiguity from previous steps to ensure that there would be blank space to tap on.

Anyway, hopefully the Escape+Backspaces technique will work.
