Bert, I have turned many photographs into icons. Sometimes it works well, and sometimes it's awful! You need to find photos that are fairly simple. I use Photoshop Elements to edit the file and shrink it down to the proper number of pixels (20x18) and save it as .bmp. I have hundreds (thousands, actually) of icons I've created. I don't actually USE this many in programs that use icons, but I get a lot of pleasure out of creating them.
