I just checked (I'm writing this on my Centro): Having unearthed Palm's 
Card Info, which usually resides in a Hidden directory of LauncherX, I 
found  that it really does report my 8GB card as a 4GB one.
As I usually perform file operations with the help of RescoExplorer (which 
correctly identifies the card as 8GB), I never noticed this.

I've never had any problems using 8 GB cards.
