But yes, you should be able to do that. For that matter, I did it on my old Linksys WRT54G router. The model I had used a Linux kernel. and several different third-party firmware replacements were available. I used one called Tomato, and could ssh to a command line in the router and use vi to diddle config files. (My SO was bemused at me running vi *on* my router.)
