As the Subject: line indicates, there is an Android port of the Open
Office Suite.
It's a straight port of existing OO to Android, and as such a rough
edged beta. It has not had the UI extensively modified, and you don't
want to try to use it on a phone. It's more or less usable on my 7"
tablet in landscape mode. You also really want an external keyboard.
On my device, if I set the scaling factor to about 70%, I got a
landscape display that was a decent compromise, and I could display a
full page width in Writer without having to side scroll. (It also
helped to turn off the main toolbar with "too big for the tablet
screen" icons, and use the menus instead.
Getting it installed in the first place was a challenge, since it's
*big* The original version I installed was a 90MB apk file, and
wanted about 200MB of free application storage. My device is rooted,
and I have a 2GB partition formatted as ext4 on the 32GB microSD card
I installed, which can be used to store programs. A freeware app
called Link2SD from the Play Store will move seleted apps from
internal storage to the card and create symlinks in the root file
system pointing to them. I was able to free enough internal app
storage to install it,a nd then moved it to the card.
The most recent update thoroughly broke it. It's a major upgrade,
built on a much more recent version of OO than the prior one.
Attempting to install it failed with an Insufficient Storage error,
and I had over 200MB of free app storage. Trying to get it installed
also somehow trashed the existing install, which was nowhere to be
found.
The developer indicated it needed 300MB free storage, though reducing
the size was a future goal. He also pointed me to a Google Drive page
where I could get a couple of prior versions (though not the most
recent working version that had been installed.)
I did some major cleanup and app shifting, and freed 427MB of app
storage. The current version still fails to install with an
Insufficient Storage error. To make it more interesting, the earlier
stand-alone apk versions from the Google Drive page fail to install as
well, with the same error. I tried installing them by copying them to
my Google Drive and using the Drive app on the table to get them.
This has worked for other apps stored there, and Android offers to
install them when I download and they install. The AOO apps fail.
At this point, I have *no* idea what's going on.
AOO is off the tablet for a while, and I'll try again when a new
version is out. Losing it isn't critical, as I have other tools that
do the same sorts of thing, and installing it was a "because I *can*"
matter, but I'd love to know what's going on under the hood.
