It's always fun to guess about things I know little or nothing about.  I did
notice two things in what Palm has said.  One I mentioned before, they are
using the same connection and cable as that used by the Palm Pro for
charging and syncing.

 

The other interesting thing was that they described combining information
from Outlook and Gmail.  They said "Outlook" not "Exchange".  Since Outlook
is a PC-based client, that can access more than just Exchange based data,
one might be tempted to believe they are going to provide PC syncing.

Actually I can think of a number of reasons that Pre users might want to
sync their data to their desktop as well as or instead of to the Cloud. Two
in particular:

1. Your company uses Outlook or Notes calendars (between them these two
account for something like 90%+ of all businesses above the very small) and
you want to integrate your business schedule with your personal one on your
smartphone.

2. Some day you might want to move to some other platform (it happens, and a
decade from now who knows what you will be using) and you want to be able to
export your PIM data in a standard format that is easily imported into that
technology (even if you never use Outlook, it is a widely used de facto
standard for PIM data). 

Of course Palm has never said that the Pre DOESN"T or CAN'T sync locally,
just that it DOES sync to the cloud. Having both options would be ideal,
actually.
