Don't care as long as files can be imported/ extracted from the 'database record'.
Would make sense for large drives/memory, large number of small files.

Wasn't there an OS in the 'old days' based on  database records?

If a file is need then it would be 'checked out for edits' and then back in once returned from work? 

CVS type of handling.

Works for me. Most end-users really do not care. May make it easier to find the file in the first place.
