Oh, this can also be related to some misconfiguration of the MSC
registers. When you fire up X you use a lot of memory and if the SDRAM
is not configured properly you will sooner or later get into trouble.

Walter: Could you please double check the MSC values for SDRAM and
flash?

The resume issue is presumably a kernel problem since the SIMpad
bootloader changes AFAIK do not affect suspend/resume path. So my guess
is rather that the SIMpad kernel uses a more WIN-CE compatible
suspend/resume code in order to copy with the original SIMpad
bootloader.
Should be quite easy to spot and fix...
