Exactly that's what i am thinking about. The screen may be switched off while 
the device is still active for exactly the reasons you said. But do you then 
want user space apps to be able to switch off the power led as well?

Perhaps a blinking LED, yes. Something to say "hey, my display is off, but 
something happened and you might want to give me some attention". But 
switching the LED completely off? Hmm, imho: no

You are right, there are mechanisms to claim the led, but the current simpad 
implementation _always_ mirrors the LED_STATE_ENABLED bit into the physical 
led. This will have to fixed, before the led can be claimed by the led driver 
you suggest.

But this would still mean, that the led remains 100% under kernel control and 
i might set the led state read only in my proc interface.
