Sorry, I'm replying to my own message here.

Note that I'm still looking for hints on why the SIMpad keys are not 
working anymore (I checked, the qte patch seems to be applied correctly).

this is fixed in opie-wellenreiter 1.2.1 (thanks Mickey). just add the 
following to opensimpad-0.9.0.conf:

PREFERRED_VERSION_opie-wellenreiter = "1.2.1"

It's a feature: the allow-no-pw patch is only applied if DISTRO_TYPE == 
"debug"

So why are these keys not working? It's the only thing that stops an 
OpenSIMpad release...
