Yes it is, but it is tricky and you have to keep your
wits about you when you do it.

The secret lies in changing the name of the user
folder each time you hotsync with a different device.
For example, I currently have a Sony Clie TJ37 and a
Palm M515 both synched to the same username. 

You can start one pda by adding the files and software
you want and hotsync it with the username of your
choice. 

Go the the Palm folder and find the folder marked with
your username. For example, my username is Gareth
Gammon. Palm created a folder called Gammong. This
folder contains all the data from the one pda I
hotsynched. RENAME THIS FOLDER. As I have a Sony Clie
TJ37 I name this folder GammongClie37. 

Do a hard reset on the second handheld so it has no
username and hotsync. The Palm Desktop will detect
that the new pda has no username and will ask you to
pick one. Choose the same username and hotsync.
Because you have renamed the first folder something
else, The desktop will think the data has been lost
and will set up a new folder with a new set of data
eg. Address book, calender, to do etc but of course
they will be empty. Now you can add the software you
want, using the same username to activate it. Each
time you hotsync the backup folder will be filled with
the new programs and files.

Moving address book and calendar data from the first
handheld to the second is also possible.

If you want to go back to hosync changes to the first
hand held, you MUST go back to the Palm folder, change
the current username folder to something else, in my
case I call it GammongM15, rename the first folder
folder back to what it was originally, eg GammonClie37
back to Gammong, and then hotsync.

This renaming of folders each time you change devices
is extremely important and you must be careful that
you don't mix up the two folders. This is because, in
my case, there are files that work only on the Clie
and if they were to get onto the M515 by accident
could cause all kinds of problems. Also my Clie uses
OS5.2 and the M515 is OS4.1. This is not always a
problem, but best to keep the pda OS's separate. The
Clie uses it's own hi-res format and the M515 is low
res. Software settings for one device may not work
properly on the other and some of my software is for
OS5 ONLY and vice versa.

It is a lot of work and a little risky just to use the
same username, but it is possible if you are careful.

If you mess up, just do a hard reset and re-build the
pda from scratch. Not a bad idea to do this every once
in a while anyway as there are always bits and pieces
of files left over that are no longer needed that just
use up your RAM without doing anything. 

Unless you are comfortable getting in the file
structures in the Palm folders you might want to give
this a miss!
