A question about moving to a higher sd card

If I want to move everything from my old 512mb sd card to a 1gb card- 
do I just install the 1gb card and do a hot synch from my laptop and 
that should load everything (except maybe the music files) or can I do 
a copy and reload like you used to make copies of diskettes only from 
the sd card drive in my laptop?
Or am I being to naive about the complexity of the process?
