its some frustrating when that happens...

I don't have experience with tom tom..

but I have a navman gps.. which attach to my tungsten t, the first time that I start using it, I thought that was broke, or something , the problem is that the gps antenna, may be "cold" and take longer to locate the satellites,

leave it on an open space for a few minutes, / 10 and 15, get sure you get the right settings for the software on your palm, like the kind of gps, serial or bluetooth, and get sure first that the palm know that is a gps in there.

  Subject: [Tungsten_T] TT5 GPS Cradle

Hi, I just bought a tom tom Navigator 5 gps system for my T5. It
took some effort to get the software installed but I believe it is
correct. The cradle is not lighting up at all when I plug it into the
cigarette lighter. It says no GPS device and when I'm outside it is
"searching for a valid gps signal". Anyone here have any experience
with this. Is my cradle dead or do I need to charge it up? Now,
granted, it is rainy and cloudy this morning in Michigan but the
cradle's red light isn't even coming on. Thanks.
  Mary
