I use

1) in $HOME/.alias, which I invoide from .profile (or .bashrc), or you could 
type at the command line:

alias mountdev='mount -r -t cramfs /mnt/cf/dev_img-1.3 /mnt/dev -o loop'
alias unountdev='umount /mnt/dev'

2) then later, at the command line
> mountdev

(do development)

>umountdev


You may also want to do this:
>PATH=/mnt/dev/bin:$PATH
after the 'mountdev' to be sure you pick up the compiler commands
