Using tmpfs for storage?

I was wondering if anyone has considered allocating all the available RAM
to memory and then using tmpfs for storage of files in RAM.  This way the
the ratio between ram/storage can chance dynamically based on the amount of
storage space used rather than having to be fixed.

Would this be practical?  I'm sure tmpfs can be modified so that it doesn't 
get erased on a reboot.
