Uh, yea, I know. That's why I specifically I mentioned "without
the -c option" in my question.

The "ping" example was just that: an example to illustrate my
question about how to send control characters.  The general
answer is Fn+shift on the "real" keyboard (or just Fn for some
keys lick z,x,c,v).

I still don't know why the ctrl key doesn't work on the
on-screen keyboard -- for some tasks I find the on-sreen
keyboard easier, so it would be nice if that worked as well. :/
