His mileage may vary? You bet. This is the shortest possible route to
blowing either his AC adapter or the entire Zaurus to pieces. The only
reason you didn't kill your SL-5500 with the process described above is
that it was designed for international markets. Had it been a Japanese
model you'd be standing over the silently smoking remains of your
device, too.

Japan doesn't have 220 V, only 100 V, 50 Hz in eastern Japan including
Tokyo, 60 Hz in the west including Osaka. The Zaurus adapter explicitly
supports only 100 V (not 110...), 50/60 Hz, 11 VA. 

A more reasonable and altogether safe alternative would be to buy a
run-of-the-mill 5 V / 1 A adapter and use a plug that fits the Zaurus'
jack.
