OK, I can reinstall the app,  move the icon back to original application tab , then uninstall.  I understand. Thank you.

But Is there a more direct way to delete the icon? Could I simply delete the reference on the file system level? Where on the file system are the icons's located? Please advise. Thank you.

You can just delete the empty icon, everything else is gone.  To remove it 
during the uninstall, you have to move it back to the applications tab 
where it installed.  There is a package info file that tells were all 
components are installed, and it does not know that you moved the icon.
