user persmissions questions

I know this has to be really basic, and apologies for the question.

Seems like a basic question, but I couldn't find it elsewhere in the forum, so apologies if this is a FAQ.

Before I modify the /usr/lib/samba/smb.conf file, I wanted to make a backup copy of the smb.conf. But the operating system on my Zaurus 5600 is stoping me from writing in the /usr/lib/samba/ directory.

How do I get permission to write in the /usr/lib/samba/ directory?
I thought I am using the Zaurus as root. When people use the Zaurus, which account are they using?
Any clues, suggestions, tips or advise are greatly appreciated. Please advise.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

This probably isn't an issue with the USB speed of the Zaurus.
Take your zaurus out of the cradle and in the terminal open the file
/usr/lib/samba/smb.conf and change the following lines:
   strict sync = yes
   sync always = yes
to
   strict sync = no
   sync always = no
Then when you next do a file transfer it should be a lot faster.
Regards,
Colin
