It is not. Java is portable: PCs, PDAs, cell phones.
This is completely different thing from VB.

Becaue you are looking in the bulk - it is normal that
on the average these applications are worse since
it is easier to start programming in it. It does not mean it is
less usefull. 

There are some quite usefull apps in Java.

What about those who write for distribution but want to keep
it portable on several platforms ?

Sorry but crosscompiling for everything is VERY annoying.

You do not have this problem with Java.

Just use right tools for your task.
