According to Andrew De Ponte <http://www.cyph.org/zsrep/>, the
protocol has to be reverse engineered before there's any hope
for syncing 3.1 ROMS with Linux:

I have contacted Sharp and attempted to obtain information
such as whether they are going to release a Linux version
of Qtopia Desktop that supports their new method and
protocol for syncing (answer is no, because it is not
feasible considering that their customers use Windows). I
then asked Sharp if they would at least be willing to
release the protocol specs so people from the open source
community could develop a software package to stand in the
place of their lacking Qtopia Desktop for Linux (it doesn't
exist). Their response to this was to look at their
developer forums which helped me by allowing me to contact
other people with the same problem but no one had a
    solution.

I then decided since Sharp was not willing to help in any
way and no one had come up with a solution that I was going
to come up with one. My reasoning was that I want a stock
Zaurus SL-5600 to be able to sync with a Linux box. In
order to accomplish this task we must understand how the
syncing works. That is where the ZSREP comes into play.
