Thanks for the complete problem description.  I hope you don't mind if 
I leave the messages out of my reply.

Try this.  In /etc/modules.conf I have:

alias CDCEther off
alias acm off
alias usb0 usbnet

And reboot (one more time only).  CDCEther and acm shouldn't get 
loaded for the Z.
