Well thanks everyone! I did not expect so many inputs so fast. I DID find a temporary and acceptable fix. As I said - the (my) WinXP is flawed. It jumps over to standard keyboard and works in some programs but not in others. So I just went and deleted the U.S. keyboard and rebooted (Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages tab/details button). Works beautifully now. I'm still looking for a hardwired. And thanks to the one who offered his old one, but I think I'll wait and see what Matrix's reply to my question is. So now I have to place my hands on the keyboard in order to get the right key if I make a mistake. I can't cheat "at all" now because it's a Qwerty layout. :-) On the side - for years I've kept the old Mavis version 5. That's when they stopped supporting it. Again - thanks.
