I am using linux exclusively for work (cannot speak for windows) and I am a 
linguist, so I do need weird characters a lot. For the Datahand Personal, 
your software has to do the remapping which is possible for many keys, but 
not the keys with a special function for the datahand. I have mapped "'" to 
dead_acute, the backtick to dead_caron and delete to multi. So I can easily 
type things like

Božo, budź miły,
zdźerž strowy a čiły
do skónčenja časow
mój serbski lud!

(That's Upper Sorbian.) Since I am living in Germany, I cannot avoid using 
German and I have """ mapped to dead_diaeresis to write "a  to get ä (good 
old LaTeX times) and "del ss" to get ß. You might be unhappy with a German 
keyboard layout however, because ä and Ä and ü and Ü will end up on different 
keys on the datahand (ok, you'll get used to that either) so you might want 
to consider a datahand professional here. (My next datahand will be one.)

I should add: It helps being a touch-typist (otherwise you'll become one) and 
you'll definitely improve your typing speed quite a bit!
