Re: COLEMAK layout?

Someone *did* try designing a better Dvorak using computers. If I
remember correctly, they combined data with evolutionary computation
and came up with the same layout. Wish I had the URL handy. Does
anyone know what I'm talking about?

I don't have any of the reach problems mentioned because I use a
TypeMatrix. Regarding "ls", I can type it very quickly, but then it's
not very important since I "alias l=ls" anyway...

If you're on windows, the TypeMatrix offers specific shortcuts for
cut/copy/paste that are grouped together. On Mac, you'll have to make
use of your touch typing skills. I do it all the time.

The comments about I and R were kind of silly. "I" *is* on the Home
Row, it's just not under your fingertips because there are 5 vowels
and you have only 4 fingers! One of the vowels was going to end next
to the others. It's accessible by the index finger on the home row.
Why Dvorak picked that one vs. the others be off the resting
fingertips, I don't know, but I bet $10 he had a reason.  :-)

Typing R is easy, but maybe it wouldn't be if I wasn't on a modern keyboard.

I consider modern keyboards to be the TypeMatrix, Kinesis and Maltron.
There may be others. I can't include the MS Natural--the last time I
used it there were some reach issues, although I don't know the
current status.

I'm not completely dissing Colemak. It looks like a fine effort to
ease the use of "standard" keyboards before the arrival of "modern"
ones. But now that modern ones are available, I don't see much point.
