In addition, there's an inherent bias against Dvorak, since almost all of its users started out with QWERTY (or AZERTY, QWERTZ, or another QWERTY variant) and had to switch to Dvorak, often after many years of practice with the barbaric layout. Hardly any QWERTY users started out on Dvorak. Comparing typing speed before and after the switch is therefore unfair, since the Dvorak typists usually have the handicap of having had to overcome QWERTY.

Paul,

You gave me an idea.

When people take typing tests, they type at their maximum speed. We
never test average speed. I wonder if using Dvorak allows you to type
more over a long period of time than typing in QWERTY would allow. I
think Dvorak provides endurance more than mere maximum speed.
