I don't think it matters.  If a user switches cold turkey, I think they can forget QW and type as fast as if they had never used it.

I typed on QW for ~26 years at a speed of about 50-60.  I switched 20 years ago to DV and have only touched QW very few times since.  My speed was about 20 after one week, about 50 after 1-2 months, and around 80 now.  I have hit 109 on typing tests on DV.

So I don't think the 'handicap' has hurt me any.
