You are right about  it being a bit pricey. And the shipping is $29!? I don't know how that's even possible. The device is size of (and probably the weight of) a pack of gum (back when gum came in 5stick packs :-).

Arduino might work. That is a good idea. I have a couple of them so I'll give that a shot.
