Sizing of termination resistors for a fault tolerant CAN bus

Hi - I am interested in finding a means of surviving my CANL or CANH lines being shorted to either ground or +14.4VDC. The CAN transceiver I'm using - the Ti SN65HVD1050QDRQ1 - can handle this just fine. But I would have to use very high power resistors (with split termination, I believe I need about 1W resistors) for my termination. That puts us into 2512 SMT resistors. That's rather large! I have seen some wide resistors with higher power handling abilities - like the Rohm LTR series. But that still leaves us with a 1020 sized resistor. Still large! Has anybody run into this before and come up with something clever? The suggestions that we've come up with in the office is to either make all transceivers sleep when a high voltage is detected on the bus (most dangerous on the CANH line) or to somehow actively disable the termination when a high voltage is detected. Neither solution is perfect IMHO. What do you think? Thank you! -Michael
