Hello, In control systems, it is strongly recommended or mandatory by functional safety standards, that e.g. bit-error ratio is continuously monitored. In CAN, as you know, it can be implemented simply by monitoring operating state of the CAN-controller, because fault confinement keeps track on the BER. Error counter values, if readable, may serve troubleshooting by providing more detailed information. In some applications I have met requirements, that approximate bus load need to be continuously monitored in order to detect certain configuration mismatches, number of CAN-level re-transmission and bus schedule in general level.
