Hello, Thanks Bram, great statement. However, there are all too many people around still wondering the goo'old 60's with analog only stuff and without "all those complex stupid diagnostics". Despite of functional safety requirements, each system has ever increasing availability demands. All diagnostics shorten directly downtime and thus should be number one in each project. Technically speaking, some CAN-controllers cannot provide reading of correct values during the operation. If supported, those numbers serve diagnostics well. Best regards, -H Heikki Saha, CTO M.Sc. Proper bus health monitoring should be an integral part of the design of any CAN-based network, especially because the application domain for CAN is more often than not in operating and controlling potentially dangerous machines/vehicles. Bus statistics and error counters are a part of that, so they should be easily and universally available.
