ION GNSS 2004

I would like to thank all of you who showed up after the normal sessions on
Thursday to talk about Open Source GPS.

Due to a heavy schedule and other preparations for the conference we didn't
do as good a job at getting the word out as Andrew Greenberg did last year
but we are starting to get noticed in the GNSS community.

I gave a short overview of what progress has been made over the last year ( 8
version updates, alot of bugs fixed, and NMEA messages etc.)  Doug Baker
told us about the introduction of a PCI interface (supported by version 1.16
with alot of help from Phil Bender).  Yu Lu from the University of California
Riverside told us about his project running under Windows 2000/XP and
using a USB interface.  His project is at  http://www.ee.ucr.edu/~crlab/usbgps/

If there is sufficient interest I would like to propose to the ION that next
year a session be devoted to Open Source GNSS projects encompassing both
hardware and software.  If you are in favor of this and/or would be
interested in preparing a paper please let me know.

Although our projects may not be pushing the edge of technology I think it
is a sign of a healthy industry when it holds the interest of amateurs and
helps fuel the interest and provide knowledge for the next generation of
scientists and engineers to enter the field.

I have been attracted to the field because as a systems engineer I see it as
a convergence of many areas of technology, any one of which could support a
lifelong career.
