I think it would be nice if there were a list published of the NXT kit parts, and if possible, mock parts so that people who want to work with building using the NXT kit, not necessarily debugging code, could also do this... I know that sounds sort of defeatist, but it breaks up tasks among skillset pools... a group is working out the mechanics, passing this on to the people working on code... viola!
