Ah... that means that the existing kernel atiusb driver seems to work. 
You should then have quite a few options:

    - You could perhaps just drop lirc and use the kerrnel decoding
    - If your applications needs the lirc application interface, you
      could use the devinput driver.
    - If there is a /dev/lirc0, you  could use the the default driver
      and this device, having lircd to decode the ir data

Hopefully [1] should sort this out in more detail.
