It should not, really, since mode2 operates on the demodulated signal.

There was a bug in Lirc, see https://sourceforge.net/p/lirc/tickets/132/ 
, that turned frequency 0 into DEFAULT_FREQ. Fixed in 0.9.4(?).

Definitely contains the bug.

But also several drivers are not "frequency 0" capable. I do not know 
which one you are using. Mine lirc_rpi 
https://github.com/bengtmartensson/lirc_rpi definitely is frequency 0 
compatible.
