I only use mode2 to read the input IR pin. irsend failed heavily; it's unable to send frames over GPIO and over sound card. 2: I only use mode2 to receive bits; I do the whole decoding and recoding work manually, in bash scripts. Then transmission is done via C code to manipulate GPIO (with wiring lib).
