Lirc Setup Help

So this may seem a bit old perhaps but I am attempting to setup lirc to
control a Motorola STB for use with MythTV.

I am trying to, I guess 'read' the remote (an IRC600) as the newest one
listed at (http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/motorola/) is the IRC451. My
problem I believe is that I only have an old serial IR receiver that I got
with a Realmagic remote back in the day.

I am at a complete loss, I've tried a custom (and a few others) receiver on
both Serial port options but running irw and hitting the remote buttons
produces nothing, and running 'irrecord -d ' does nothing as well .

When I do a  dmesg |grep lirc:

I am running on Ubuntu 16.04 with 4.4.0-112-generic kernel.
